The Body Remembers — Even When We Don't
Share
There are moments in life when we react bigger than the situation seems to warrant.
A word spoken may elicit churning in your gut, or sweating all of a sudden
A comment hits deeper than it should.
A tone of voice feels threatening.
A room full of people makes us anxious for no clear reason.
We might think:
"What's wrong with me?"
But what if nothing is wrong?
It could be your body simply remembers something your mind doesn't!
Trauma Isn't Just a Memory
When we think about trauma, we often picture a story.
An event.
A date.
Something we can describe. A specific incident.
But many experiences — especially early ones — happen before we have language.
And some stress responses may even be inherited through generations.
Modern research in epigenetics suggests that chronic stress can influence how our genes related to stress and survival are expressed.
Not changing who we are.
But shaping how our bodies respond.
In other words:
Sometimes the body carries history the mind never recorded. For example,
Below Language
This is why healing isn't always found through talking alone.
Because trauma often lives below language.
In the breath.
In muscle tension.
In startle responses.
In the nervous system.
You can't reason your way out of something that wasn't formed through reason.
Sometimes you have to go gently.
Through the senses.
Through presence.
Through beauty.
Where Art Comes In
This is one of the reasons art has become so meaningful in my own life.
Not as therapy.
Not as a fix.
But as a way of listening.
When I paint, things surface that I didn't know I was holding.
Colors feel like emotions.
Textures feel like memories. A rough surface can feel like tension.
A soft, blended area can feel like comfort.
Scraped-back paint can feel like something lost or uncovered.
Layers feel like history.
It's less about creating something impressive and more about paying attention.
Sometimes the brush says what my words can't.
Sometimes God meets me there quietly, without explanation.
You Don't Have to Explain Everything
If you've ever been moved by a piece of art and couldn't explain why…
If you've ever teared up without a clear story…
If you've ever felt comforted by something you couldn't logically justify…
There's nothing wrong with you.
Your body might simply be recognizing something familiar.
Something safe.
Something it's needed for a long time.
And maybe healing doesn't always start with understanding.
Maybe sometimes it starts with allowing yourself to feel.

If this resonates with you, I invite you to pay attention to what you’re drawn to — in art, in beauty, in prayer.
Sometimes what moves us is telling a story our words haven’t found yet.
